For My Dad

This article is for my dad. I probably could have written something about Magnus’s birthday that was last Sunday (wow, I can hardly believe he is 4!), or the work on the pageant play that we have been doing, or the fantastic new product Felice and I have come up with, (look for it in my next article), but when I was going through song to purchase from iTunes, I came across one that I just HAD to get. And once I started listening to it, I knew that there was only one thing I could write about. And, if it sounds a little cheesy, I do apologize. I was really trying to portray emotion, feeling, the real essence of a memory.

I’m sitting at my computer right now, listening to Bruce Cockburn’s ‘Salt, Sun and Time’ and I am caught up in emotion. I can’t listen to this song without thinking of my dad. I can picture him, sitting on our old wood couch, with the cusions that my mother recovered, after dinner by a cozy fire playing this on his guitar. I remember when I was a little girl, just wanting to sit in the living room near him while he strummed away. He didn’t need to sing, although I loved when he sang songs too, and this song, without lyrics, in particular moves me. I remember my dad’s intense expression when he played this song; focused, calm and beautiful all at the same time.

As I watched his skilled fingers find the notes, a memory was being made. One of the strongest ones of my childhood. I listened to many different musicians growing up and even had the opportunity to watch a few others, but none of them evoke the feelings this song does and none of them will ever be as great as my dad playing this song.

I look at my dad now and see him, how strong he had to be to raise us and take care of our family. It was no easy task, as I am learning, now that I have a family myself. I want him to know that I am very thankful that he took the time to sit and play for us. Thankful that he would come to play the ‘Lie-la-lie’ song for me and Felice at bedtime. Thankful that he made music a part of our lives. I will have the childhood memories of him playing guitar forever in my heart. Even though they may not have seemed that significant, they remain a very important part of my life. I love you dad, so much.

Stories by Joe and Gabriel

Hullo Folks!
Here’s a story from Joe’s imagination, and a couple blurbs Gab added.

There will be pictures to illustrate this story…I reckon I’ll get around to it over the next few weeks, along with those Halloween pictures and hunting cartoons and pictures of Cecily….it will happen! Maybe St. Nicholas will tuck a Round-to-It in my shoes tomorrow morning ;D

At any rate, it’s a very special sort of story that only a four year old boy might tell. I don’t know where he gets all these ideas….

Based on Tall Tales by Joseph Fraser

“There was a little deer and it climbed up our window right here where the holes are and it throwed a snowball at Sophia’s window. The window broke and glass fell on the floor and I cleaned it up. The deer walked on Sophie’s window and Sophie got a stick and said, ‘Deer, what are you doing to Aunty Fleesa’s window?’
And the deer bonked the neighbor’s tree on the other side. The tree fell down and hurt Gab and squished a bird and the bird was dead. The deer was lying on the ground because it hurt itself. I kissed Gab better and said, ‘Are you alright?’ and I held the bird in my hands and kissed it and it flew away. It flew out of Gab’s hands.

There was a dragon stepping on the deer and it was going to get the deer with a snowy white string. I stomped on the dragon and Gab did. We were both stomping on the dragon. I bonked the dragon to the tree and there was blood. It didn’t move.”

Gab interjects- “I kicked ‘nother dragon over Sophia’s side!! I kicked dragon with my boot!!”

Joe continues- “I kissed the deer on the head and it didn’t bonk anything more.”

                                                         THE END

The trailers….

Joe- “The deer went up on a BBQ- it went onto the birdie and then the birdie crashed into the tree and it goed onto the blackbird with the snowy white.”

Gab- “Dragon kicked me with my boot! I kicked dragon with my boot!”

Joe- “And then Gab spat at the dragon and throwed a toy at the dragon!”

Gab- “I throwed a rock at the dragon!”

Joe- “Yeah, Gab throwed a rock!”

Gab- “And then I stepped on him.”

Joe- “Then Gabriel wrecked his wings. Then Gab throwed a tree at the, the-”

Gab- “Dragon!!”                    THE END

Happy Saint Nicholas Day to everyone!
Happy 4th Birthday Magnus (Dec. 7th)
Remember to also kick back and celebrate Dec. 8th (Immaculate Conception- a holy day of obligation just about everywhere BUT Canada…)

Cheers and God Bless!

Well, so much for gloating over Felice for being punctual with my articles. Here it is a week AFTER I was supposed to get my blurb out. Oh well. Humility is a good thing. Felice, I promise not to tease you about being late anymore!!!

I think I’ll write about a mini vacation Jeff, the kids, and I took a couple weeks ago. We decided to head up to Edmonton to drop off a business photocopier/printer for the priests Fraternity House in Edmonton, stay at hotel  with a pool and take the kids swimming, take in the latin mass in Town the next day and then head back to Calgary.
We made it there in good time, however, we ended up having to wait quite a bit before being able to drop the printer off at the house. So in the meantime, we went to the hotel we planned to stay at, and get our room. Alas, they were completely full. There wasn’t any room at the next hotel either. Or the next one. Or the next 3 we tried. Apparently it was Rodeo Days in Edmonton. I have never heard of it before, but I guess it’s quite the ordeal and every hotel was pretty much booked solid. So we were faced with the prospect of driving back to Calgary that night.  After driving around Edmonton for a few hours we got a call from Father letting us know he was back at the Fraternity house and we could drop off the printer. Once there, he was very kind to offer us the basement of the house, but we opted to keep looking for a place. We had promised the kids we would find somewhere with a pool and take them swimming, thus Jeff’s determination to find just that. We figured since there was nothing in Edmonton, that we would head back towards Calgary and try along the way.
We reached Nisku and checked the first Hotel there……once again, there was no room. We checked one more place, The Hampton, that seemed to have an empty parking lot, so our hopes were up a little. Turns out, that they did in fact have a room….butonly one of the King rooms that would end up being a little pricier than we liked. But…they gave us a deal on the room because they had 20+ rooms that were empty, including standard Queen rooms, that just weren’t cleaned. So they let us have the King room for the price of the Queen!!! We checked in and Jeff picked up dinner. We finished eating around 8:30 and then heading down to the pool! (a little late but we all wanted to go for a swim!) We had a blast. The kids, after some initial distrust in their floater suits, began to relax and really have fun! Evelyn slept the whole time in her carseat, allowing both Jeff and I to get right into playing with the kids. It was so much fun and so rejuvenating to splash around in the water, swim with our children, and relax in the hottub. There were beach balls and swim boards for the kids to play with and play with them they did. For the most part we had the pool to ourselves, until a boys hockey team showed up and took over the pool for about a 1/2 hour. Around 11:00 we decided to call it a night and headed back to our room. With the four big kids squished into the pull out couch, Jeff and I settled into the King sized bed, tired and happy after a fun evening as a family.
We were up bright and early the next day to take in our complimentary continental breakfast in time to attend Mass at 9:00. I have to say that our children were so completely well behaved at breakfast that a few of the other patrons expressed their amazement at how good they were. As did the hotel staff! There are times when our children can make us sooo proud of them!! I just beamed!
So we finished off our day, with Mass, a quick visit to the folks in Devon (I’ll elaborate on that next time) and headed back to Calgary.
While our trip cost a bit more than I would have liked, it was definitely worth it. I think it was just what we needed as a family. A little get away from Calgary and the usual scene, and good quality time spent with our kids. I love being a mom and I just loved the time I got to spend with my wonderful husband and terrific kids!!  We plan to do it again sometime!

On that note, I will end with a couple of quotes from the kids during the trip:

Maia to Kalilah during the drive up - “Guess what? Underneath my sweater, I’m sweating!”

Tegan was chewing the last of his apple strudel when Magnus saw it and asked if there was one for him. I picked up the one I had for him saved, and turned to pass it to him. Tegan had however, in a moment of kind generosity spit out the bite he had been masticating and offered it to Magnus. Magnus, for obvious reason grabbed the full strudel I offered instead of the soggy pre-chewed mess offered by Tegan. Our baby boy, on seeing this, burst into tears and wailed, “I SHARING!”He was so hurt that his morsel wasn’t accepted! I hope this event didn’t put Tegan off of sharing for the fear of begin turned down.

Ah kids!

A November Blurb

Hmmmm… let’s get you up-to-date

All Hallow’s Eve

The Kilah’s, the two oldest Noakley kids, Dr. O’Neill, and the Dark Side, all came over to the Far Side for some good, clean (relatively) fun. After a Friday meal of fish and chips and a surprisingly mellow rosary (considering the number of children present under the age of 8), Thea took a majority of the kiddos out trick-or-treating. There was quite a variety in the costumes, covering a broad range of saints, cartoon characters, clownish figures, and royalty. Thea was confused, with her neon pink wig, jail-bird pants, clown ruffle, and goodness-knows what else. People were handing out treats to her when she took the kids from door to door. Apparently you’re never too old to trick or treat if you’re costume shows enough effort.
Those who stayed home glued together popsicle stick saint puppets and decorated candy bags.
After gallavanting about the neighborhood, everyone came back, sorted their loot, and then massed into the backyard for the annual pinata bashing. Colin had the pinata tied to a curtain rod, hanging over the top of the swing set, while Jeff and Felice photographed and Dr. O’Neill did the blindfolding. All the kids took turns swinging and hollering. Even the Three Amigos took swings when it was evident that a little more force was needed to break through the endless layers of paper mache.
After the pinata broke open, the kids scavenged through the grass in the dark, collecting the sweets and piling them into bowls.
Colin returned the Noakley children to their home, then we began to tidy up and get the little children into bed. Colin and Jeff carved their pumpkins, and we arranged them next to the Dark Side’s 2 faced pumpkin, lit candles in them, turned off the lights, and took pictures. Hopefully I’ll get pictures out this week. Maybe next year we’ll have to have a competition….hmmmm
Afterwards, those of us who were still awake settled in the living room to watch The Scarlet Pimpernel (a true classic) and wind down after the evenings festivities. It was lots of fun!

All Souls’ Day has come and gone as well. Colin and I managed to visit the cemetery to say some prayers for those who have passed away, and we made a trip over to Mountain View cemetery with some flowers. It is a season rich in graces- hopefully you all got an opportunity to think about, remember, and pray for loved ones who have passed away. Next year, I think I would like to gather some photographs of deceased friends and family members, and make a little altar for them, so that on All Souls’ Day we can light a candle by their photos and say a prayer for them. I was inspired by what Jodi told me they do in Mexico. They have so many rich traditions in that country!

Remembrance Day is just around the corner- a good time to think about the courage of our troops who have fought and are fighting so bravely for the defense of the innocent. Our car magnet is fading so I think I may zoom over to the army base some time and  pick up a couple of those bright yellow “Support Our Troops” magnets.

St. Nicholas’ Day and Christmas are also approaching. A fun time to plan new traditions, organize tree hunting, and etc. I’m curious about the 12 days of Christmas at Heritage Park- we’ll see how much it costs. Colin and I are really hoping for a good turn-out for the annual tree hunt this year. It’s always tricky fitting it into so many different schedules for the same day, but it sure is great to get out into the mountains, hike around, find your own tree, hack it down, and then let the kids toboggan, and sit around the bonfire eating lunch and drinking hot chocolate. The Fraternity has already sent out Christmas card samples…we’ll see how timely we are this year.

I should make mention of the Zikka’s recent marriage encounter. Agnieszka and Isaac both had a great time, wished it was longer, got asked to volunteer for future events, and appear to be handling Isaac’s return to the home-front just fine and dandy.

Joe would like to say something: “Dear Grandpa, and I want to say Dear Nanny, and Grandma Snoek. And Grampy. Um, Nanny. Grandma. And the Bobbies. And I like the Bash brothers. And a robot, and Thomas the Tank Engine Movie, and a pumpkin, and I like Linus too. And I like the piano, and Linus, and the choo choo trains, and I like Percy has the light, and Thomas has the light, and I like Gordon, and James, and Henry, and Thomas. And I like other stories. That’s all enough I like to play with. And I like TV and eyeballs. And I like yogurt and I like strawberries. And I like this (motioning to Aiden’s egg-carton spider that we need to return to him). I would  like to say to the people if Percy has a light in their drawers. I like caterpillars. And I like my special train book that I got from Grandpa. And I need to say thankyou to him.”

Birthday greetings go out to Elijah, Agnieszka, Dominic, and Sophia!

Oh, I should mention- Colin and I picked up Bella. Google it if you want to know more. I’ll just say that it is a fantastic movie, and if anyone around here would like to borrow it, they are most welcome! Also, what do you think of us asking Mark Steyn if he would like to freely contribute to Blarmpers. Thea and Colin don’t think he’d do it. Maybe if we offered chocolate as a bribe. I’m also hoping to get Kathy Woodard on here. We’ll see if she has time, being a busy mother and all. As always, we welcome contributions from everyone, be it a glimpse into your life, speculations about life, politics, recipes, whatever, as well as cartoons and pictures. I’m hoping to start up a new series of cartoons called “Boom boom”, regularly featuring the three amigos.

Finally, if anyone has any good winter craft ideas to do with 2 and 4 year olds, I’m all ears. Being thrust into the (apparently) frigid November temperatures, Gab and Joe have both decided that they won’t stay outside longer than 1/2 hour at a time, which is “a long, long day” as is, and I’m anxious about how we’ll weather through the winter with them being indoors so much. Read along CD’s are a true life saver, but only last so long. And the library only allows you to take out 30 holds. And there are only so many Thomas the Tank Engine and Amelia Bedelia read-alongs. ahhhh….. so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Signing out- cheers and God Bless!

Stories from the North

This particular post was supposed to be sent out a few weeks ago. I had it all ready to go, with the date on it and everything…..and then didn’t sent it out. Unfortunately my mind is not as sharp as I’d like to think, and I am FAR from being as organized as I would like to be. So, if you will allow me to make some little bloopers with the blarmpers (haha..that sounds so funny I just had to say it) I now give you Stories from the North, which is a few little conversations and stories contributed by Nishka, my sister in law.

Cheers!

Stories from the North

In a small town located about 270 km North of Calgary lives this fairly average sized family. A husband, wife and four perfect children.

The husband works away from home quite a bit, he usually sees his family every 16 days, depending on how busy his work is. The wife is quite used to him being away, and his days off often felt like a ‘visit’ or a crazy overbooked days of appointments and chores. She often said ‘It’s much easier to do it all while my husband’s home’, or ‘We’ll take a break on his next days off’, or ‘there is too much to do I had to book it all for when he’s home’… That went on for about 5 years!

One fine Friday evening the wife took a short trip to Calgary on business and to visit with family. While she was there her husband called and announced that he got a promotion -ok just to make it clear, not a ‘make more money’ promotion… rather a new job position with way less money – he calls it a ‘promotion-demotion’ har har har, and as of October 1st 2008 the husband will be home every night and every weekend!!!

So this merry wife went on about her business for the weekend. She went to visit her family who just a few days earlier brought a new bundle of joy to this world -a beautiful big baby girl.

While she visited she had to share the news and happily announced that her husband will be home every day… It went something like this:

I am so excited I will have my husband ‘over’ every night!” Anything else she may have said was lost amongst the laughter!

In the samll town of Devon, residents have been complaining of missing lotions, vaseline, creams and other squeezable greesy products. The mischief makers often leave trials behind, usually all over the floor, sink and in the toilet. They are described as two about 40 inches tall females. Usually the first clue is ‘quiet’ the second clue is ‘they are very quiet’ and the third clue is ‘ok they are way too quiet’…. by then it’s too late. Not a hope of saving the lotion bottle!

Isaac: So, Karolina, what have you learned at shool today?

Karolina: Ummmm, nothing much…

Isaac: Well that sounds like a waste of a day.

Karolina: Oh! We did learn about waste.

Isaac (rolling his eyes): Glad to be of assistance.

Hello!!!!

Welcome to our Blog!!!

I never thought I’d be a person to have a blog. It just wasn’t something I was interested in doing, especially now, for a few reasons. The main one being that I just don’t have the time and I suspect my partner in crime, Felice, doesn’t either. However, as we have been putting out fairly regular Blarmpers!  articles to our subscribers, I thought this would be a convenient way to post them, so that our readers can refer back to later articles, new subscribers can see older posts and so Felice and I can keep track of whose turn it is to get a story out! (I think this week is my turn, but I can’t remember if Felice got hers out!) Therefore, a blog I will have, jointly with Felice.  We will, as with our Blarmpers! e-mails, attempt to have them posted up here every week for your enjoyment. Feel free to tell your friends, relatives and co-workers and don’t forget to send us comments, stories, topic ideas, quotes or original works for us to include!

Welcome and Thanks for checking in!
